What can help
Try not to rush in when your baby cries. Babies need time to settle themselves and learn to fall back asleep on their own.
Put your baby to bed drowsy rather than already asleep. Babies held or rocked to sleep may struggle to fall back asleep after waking in the night.
When your baby needs you
You can still go to your baby when they need you, such as to feed them, change a dirty diaper or comfort them when they’re sick. Keep things calm and quiet, and speak softly if you talk.
Afterward, place your baby on their back in their own sleep space. If you brought them into your bed to feed or comfort them, put them back before you fall asleep.
